top x adventure games of all time in no particular order pt. 3

ii. sam and max hit the road.

Sam and Max Hit the Road is based on a comic book series by Steve Purcell, who in turn also helped create the game. The story follows the two titular detectives, Sam, a canine shamus, and Max, a hyperkinetic rabbity-thing, on a trip across the country to solve their latest case. Which happens to be the disappearance of a carnival bigfoot and his love, Trixie the Giraffe-Necked Girl. The case takes them across the country's tourist stops, like The World's Largest Ball of Twine, "Snuckey's Rest Stop", and Mt. Rushmore. All of which have a little comic twist on them. The writing cleverly done, and you can really see the love in the project. It's rare that the project leader is also the creator of the source material, but it obviously paid off here. This is another out of print title, but it's popularity keeps it cheap and somewhat easy to find.

i. the dig.

The Dig is the most serious game on the list outside of maybe Sanitarium or Grim Fandango which both have moments at the least, of whimsy. The Dig is a riveted, streamlined, no nonsense hard sci-fi story from the minds of Steven Spielberg, Sean Clark and Orson Scott Card. It was originally slated to be a film, but the cost was too high for the studios to consider it, so Spielberg took it to a different medium. The story follows five astronauts on what starts as typical popcorn sci-fi fare, stopping an asteroid from hitting the Earth, it quickly changes gears as the astronauts discover that the asteroid is hollow and upon exploration, find that it is a sort of teleportation device to a distant world. The Dig can be found for five dollars on Steam.

  1. I whole heartedly agree with every single game on this list...well I didn't play Indiana Jones, but it's a Lucas Arts classic.
I am especially happy that you picked one of the games I absolutely loved so many years ago...7th Guest.
